CVT Knocking Sound

I have nissan sentra sr2014 and i have driven it for 4 yrs now with 115,000 kms mileage. Now according to Nissan the knocking sound that i get is due to failing transmission which needs to be replace and costing more than $5400! They said it is not under warranty anymore. Is that fair?
