Consider Other Dermatology Options

1

I sought help at Dr Shelbi Hayes’ office at an appointment on September 17, 2019 for swollen spot (first noticed August 2019) in a crease on the outside of my right ear. Dr Hayes’ PA, Kirsten Short examined the swollen spot in question and gave me a sample of the steroid lotion, Halobetasol propionate 0.01% to apply once daily. I was instructed to return for a follow-up on October 17th. After approximately a week, I noticed the swollen area was worse and it became more sensitive to touch. I called Dr Hayes’ office to see if I could get an earlier appointment to re-examine the area? Note: My family has a history of skin cancer and I didn’t want to take any chances. The staff member took my name and phone number and said someone would return my call. After approximately five working days, I had not heard back from Dr Hayes’ office. I decided to call back and see what if anything was learned. I made this call on October 1st and staff member on this occasion had no explanation for why no one called me back and told me the first opportunity to be seen was at my October 17th appointment. I conveyed my concern about the status of the spot and the staff member maintained there were no other options for an earlier office visit. I was also told there was no cancellation list to be placed on. By October 5th the area in question worsened, becoming more swollen and painful. I went to a local urgent care clinic and the doctor examined my ear. The urgent care physician told me to call back to Dr Hayes’ office as a biopsy was likely the best course of action based on her examination. It should also be noted that a family member was able to make an appointment at Dr Hayes’ office on short notice and was seen within a week during the same time period. On October 6th, I decided to mail a letter directly to Dr Hayes herself, wondering if the problem I was having was due to the office staff? I never heard back from Dr Hayes or anyone from her office. I decided to seek treatment with another dermatologist. I recommend other consider other options versus seeking help at Dr Shelbi Hayes’ Office.
