Cold as Ice

So, I thought that posting a negative review on Facebook might encourage them to respond. However, as they currently have a 1.2 star rating, I doubt that is the case. But, as I just spent an hour talking to them, only to have nothing resolved, I am still invested in warning people not to use Georgia Natural Gas (GNG). Prepare yourself, this will be long. It was the end of October, and my apartment was getting very cold, but I, like any unsuspecting customer, was on the prowl for a good deal and wanted to make sure that I went with the best company. If only I knew then what I know now. After looking around a bit GNG looked like a good candidate, and the freezing temperatures demanded I make a decision fast. I on November 1, signed a 6-month fixed rate contract and became a GNG customer. The relationship began, as many do, with a spark. In this case, it was gas being channeled to the burners, but a spark none the less. As the temperature began to rise in my apartment so did my happiness. The relationship progressed, and sure, their additional fees may be high, but I was committed. Winter came and left, then spring came and as it was wrapping up, I began to receive notices from GNG asking if I would like a new contract. The temperature was becoming pleasant, and I was certain that when my contract was up on May 2nd, I would be able to survive on my own. But, as I would come to learn, GNG could not survive without me. I received a bill this past week, demanding $31.62 in fees and $0.00 for gas. “Surely this must be a mistake”, I thought naively to myself. I gave them a call and began speaking to a representative. “When a contract ends you are automatically switched to a variable plan”, the rep said. “Was I sent any notification?”, I asked. “Yes! You should have an email”, she said. “When was the email sent?”, I calmly asked. And so the chase began. What followed was 45 minutes of GNG saying I was notified by email, me asking which email, as I never deleted any of the emails they sent. Being put on hold. Being told it was in the fine print in the email. Me asking where, only to be placed on hold yet again. Being moved to a supervisor and put on hold. The supervisor then telling me that I was notified of the switch to the variable plan in the renewal email. Me FORWADING her the email to look at and to tell me WHERE I was notified of the charges! Her reading the email and then telling me that it DOES NOT say that they WOULD NOT move me to a variable plan. WHAT!!!! It doesn’t say that they won’t?!?!!!! It was at that moment it dawned on me that I was not going to have this situation resolved. I blocked and parried for an hour against this corporate machine, for $63.24, because, as I found out, they are billing me for next month, and eventually they found the fine print. It wasn’t in any of the emails they sent me, but a single line in Aprils bill (not any former bill or any bill since), that said they would switch me over to the variable plan. No consent was give, but then again, no consent was asked. TLDR: I signed a 6-month fixed rate contract and, when that ended, they signed me up without my consent for a new plan costing $31.62 in fees every month. Don’t use GNG. For GNG: How is this even a good business practice? I would have used you again and again, but now I will be a stalwart guardian to warn all to stay far away from you. It’s ironic that you heat homes, but your heart is cold as ice.
