Cold Air Expansion project nightmare

1

On 8-9-12, I had Advanced Mechanical install 1 cold air return in each of my 3 bedrooms on the top floor of my home. They also enlarged a cold air return in my lower level. The 3 new returns do not work at all (draw air). The work was extremely poor as well. I took digital pictures and sent them to a friend, who is a HVAC Sales Engineer. He agreed the work was poor, and that it wouldn’t draw air as it is supposed to do. On 8-22-12, I had a 36 year HVAC veteran inspect the work. He too, concurred with the HVAC Sales Engineer, that the work was poor and that it was improperly installed. At one point the HVAC expert & his partner started to laugh at the installation. He also noted that the cold air return on the lower level should never have been enlarged, because the whole heating/cooling improvement plan was to bring more cold air return to the top floor of the home, and by increasing the airflow in the lower level, it would counteract what we are trying to accomplish on the top floor. In addition, Advanced Mechanical also borrowed a hammer and ladder without asking. They did ask to borrow a long drill bit, which they have not returned yet. I was home during the installation work, but I was focused on my job. Before they left my home, I did a test with a piece of paper and noticed that the paper was not drawn to any of the new vents. When I brought the test result to the attention of the owner, he said “oh, they will work”. Shortly after they left and I was really able to inspect the work, I noticed they had gouged and scratched my new hardwood flooring and left a screw off of one of the vents. I immediately texted the owner and informed him of the damage, missing screw, and our displeasure with the installation and damage. In this text, I also asked where my long drill bit is. The owner responded to my text, and only answered that he did not have my bit, while totally ignoring the floor damage & our displeasure. On 8-12-12 I tried to reach the owner through email via his website. He has not made any effort to contact me. They also damaged the drywall in the master bedroom, which is $100 to repair. The floor damage is $300. I paid $950 for the poor workmanship. The grand total loss is $1350.
