Charging problems with Garmin 520 plus

1

Update by user Oct 05, 2020 Unresolved Original review posted by user Oct 05, 2020 I ordered my Garmin 520 plus device on August 26, 2020, and received it on August 28, 2020. My first ride with this device was on August 29, 2020. After my 21st ride with this device on Saturday, October 3, 2020, I plugged in my Garmin 520 plus to charge and it would not charge. I first Googled how to fix or remedy, and I was surprised that this seems to be a common problem. I tried resetting, cleaning the charge port and tried different charging methods. When that didn't work I contacted the support center and got Kurt. He indicated his conclusion from the very beginning was that the charge port was damaged, a pin out of place. He asked me to send a picture of the charging port, which I did. He indicated physical damage was not covered by the warranty, and after reviewing the picture it looked like a pin was missing and I would have to do an exchange for $110 plus shipping. He started processing the order (103779****86) and I texted back I have a hard time believing physical damage as the device was new and I have only charged the device about 20 times. I plug in devices all the time to charge with no problem. (i.e., phones, cameras, Garmin Edge 500, Garmin Watches, Fitbit, etc.) He indicated as goodwill he can send me a free cable. What good is a cable when I already have one? After that I asked him again are you sure its missing a pin, and he replied, the image isn't all that clear, but I assume that the far left pin is missing as that would be the only conclusion as to why it failed to charge. I figured I had no choice, so I started processing the item for shipping and paid the fee. The more I thought about it, this is not fair and I'm going to call on Monday when I can talk to live person. I called first thing Monday on October 5, 2020, the individual never identified themselves however, they send the picture I send to Kurt to engineering, and they indicated it could be the charging board. So he canceled the original order and stated they had no new units in stock and I would get a refurbished unit. (103779****73). Please note I could have bought a refurbished unit versus new for half the cost that I paid. Also, note Kurt never indicating that I was getting a refurbished unit above and this was not indicated on the order as being refurbished. In addition, to get the refurbished unit I would have to pay a deposit of $220 plus pay for shipping and handling. Does that seem fair as the item should have been covered by warranty? My last Garmin for my bike was Edge 500 that I purchased in December 2015, the power button coating came off (defective design) so it could not turn on anymore. I've been purchasing Garmin products for over 30 years (many heart rate monitors and watches during my running days.) and I was very disappointed, the way this was handled. As a business person I thought you should know how the company handled this. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me. User's recommendation: Charging problems with Garmin 520 plus.
