Cannot connect Tivo service

They claim they didn't make any changes to the service but at the beginning of this month my TiVo roamio units quit talking to their server. They wanted me to refresh my units at my cost. User's recommendation: drop Tivo; there are other solutions out there if they are to treat a long time customer this way.
