Calls going directly to voicemail with no identification

I get calls all the time and the phone doesn't ring but goes directly to voice mail. I don't know how this can happen. The voice mail simply states the phone number 888-544-**** and then repeats it. Nothing to tell me who is calling or why! I need them to stop calling me!
