Billed for electricity that I didn’t use

Do they actually read meters? I was out of town the whole month of September. The only electricity was used by my fridge. Yet, I was billed for more usage that month than for the most recent usage during the extended heatwave, when I ran my AC pretty much around the clock. How is that possible?
